The Texel Lighthouse has been a landmark for island residents, tourists, and seafarers for decades. But actually sleeping in this spot? For a long time, it seemed impossible. Yet it has now become a reality. In collaboration with Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission), the local municipality, and a Texel architect, the top part of the lighthouse has been converted into a double suite – preserving its original character and the expansive view over the North Sea, Wadden Sea, and Vlieland.
Silence, stars, and a unique experience
The space is minimally furnished: a comfortable double bed, a small seating area, and a pull-out platform where a breakfast hamper is placed in the morning. Electricity is available, but there is deliberately no Wi-Fi. The intention is for guests to truly disconnect from the world below.
Anyone who wants to book this experience must be prepared to make some effort. There is no elevator, and the staircase has 118 steps. Availability is also limited: only 30 nights per year are opened to the public. According to the initiators, this keeps it “a special experience for a small group, not a tourist attraction.”
Whether additional dates become available depends on this trial year. Over the coming months, the first overnight stays will be closely monitored – not only for comfort but also for environmental impact. “We want to make sure it fits the location and the island,” says the project coordinator.
