Echte Bakker Timmer on Texel: where tradition and innovation meet

If you follow the scent of fresh bread on Texel, you will soon find yourself at Echte Bakker Timmer. For over a century, this bakery has been a familiar face on the island. What began in 1910 as a small village bakery in Oosterend has grown into a family business with five shops, four of which feature their own tearoom. Yet, it still feels like stepping into your local neighbourhood bakery.

The history of Bakker Timmer reads like an ode to the craft. In 1947, grandfather Jan Timmer opened his bakery in Den Burg, and today the third generation is at the helm. While some recipes remain unchanged and the craftsmanship stays the same, the outlook is firmly on the future. It is precisely this that makes this bakery so special: a family business that continues to innovate without losing its roots.

The power of craftsmanship and innovation

At Echte Bakker Timmer, everything revolves around balance. Wherever possible, the bakers use Texel ingredients, including grain grown on the island and milled by the De Traanroeier windmill in Oudeschild. You can taste that local origin in every loaf. At the same time, there is plenty of room for innovation. The range was recently expanded to include sourdough breads – loaves that rise slowly using their own natural sourdough culture for a deep, full flavour.

It shows that Echte Bakker Timmer is moving with the times. Tradition stands firm, but the craft evolves with new flavours and techniques. And all this is delivered with that typical Texel down-to-earth attitude: just good bread, honestly made.

The tearooms: take a seat and enjoy

Those who follow the aroma of freshly baked biscuits often end up in one of Bakker Timmer’s tearooms. You can find them in Den Burg, De Koog, De Cocksdorp, and Oudeschild. This is where it all comes together: the smell of fresh bread, the warmth of the oven, and the relaxed pace of the island.

It is the perfect place to settle down with coffee and cake, a luxury sandwich, or something savoury. In the summer, you can grab a table after a walk or a visit to the beach; in the winter, you can warm up with a cappuccino and a delicious pastry. The atmosphere is friendly and informal – you feel right at home immediately.

A trusted face on Texel

Despite its growth, Echte Bakker Timmer has always remained accessible. The shops are modern, yet the sense of familiarity remains. The team consists of regular faces, and the bread is still baked daily on Texel soil. Anyone walking into the bakery will notice that care and attention are the standard here.

Texel and sheep are inextricably linked. But behind those grazing flocks in the landscape lies a remarkable story. The wool from these sheep isn't just a byproduct; it's the beginning of wonderfully comfortable duvets, mattress toppers, pillows, and futons. Texeler knows this better than anyone and has been craftingsustainable sleep products from it for years – something the entire island is proud of.
