From family business to fine dining: the story behind Restaurant RJ

In the Gravenstraat in Den Burg, every evening is dedicated to creating an experience that goes beyond just dining out. Restaurant RJ is where refined dishes, bold wines, and hospitality converge in a style that feels international, yet remains firmly rooted on Texel. Since its founding in 2020 by Jordy Schuijl, RJ has rapidly grown into one of the most talked-about fine dining destinations on the island and beyond.

Jordy started RJ at a young age in De Cocksdorp, driven by his passion for gastronomy and wine. Currently, RJ operates as a stylish pop-up location in the heart of Den Burg, while work continues behind the scenes on the next step. In December, RJ will move to Hotel Tide in De Koog, which is currently being completely renovated into a new destination where fine dining, wine experiences, and accommodation come together.

Prestige menu and à la carte

At RJ, it's all about flavour, detail, and experience. The Prestige menu forms the culinary heart of the restaurant. Guests choose several courses where seasonal products, pure flavours, and refined techniques take centre stage. Classic dishes are given a unique signature and are combined with modern influences and carefully constructed layers of flavour. Naturally, the kitchen works with Texel products whenever possible.

In addition to the Prestige menu, à la carte dining is also available. This leaves room for guests who prefer to curate their own evening. However, the strength of RJ lies primarily in the complete picture: a long evening of dining with perfectly paired wines, attentive service, and dishes that complement each other in both pace and flavour.

Wine bar with over 800 wines

Wine plays perhaps as big a role within RJ as the kitchen itself. The wine bar boasts more than 800 different wines, a large number of which are served by the glass. From elegant classics from renowned wineries to rare bottles that you won't easily find elsewhere. In recent years, the wine list has already earned RJ several international awards within the wine world.

Family business

What makes RJ extra special is that the story goes much further than a single restaurant. Behind the concept stands the Schuijl family. Jordy focuses entirely on Restaurant RJ and soon also on Hotel Tide in De Koog. Meanwhile, his parents Simone and Marc look after Camping Woud and Hotel Noir. In the future, Restaurant Noir will also find a place within the family business once again. At the end of May 2027, Noir will reopen its doors with its own concept focused on bites and à la carte dishes. Together, they continue to build a new generation of hospitality on Texel, each with their own style and character.

RJ demonstrates that fine dining on Texel doesn't have to be aloof. The restaurant combines class, composure, and craftsmanship with the warmth of a family business that lives for hospitality. It is precisely this combination that makes an evening at RJ more than just a dinner. It is a place where flavour, wine, and attention come together in a setting that lingers long after the last glass has been poured.

Texel and sheep are inextricably linked. But behind those grazing flocks in the landscape lies a remarkable story. The wool from these sheep isn't just a byproduct; it's the beginning of wonderfully comfortable duvets, mattress toppers, pillows, and futons. Texeler knows this better than anyone and has been craftingsustainable sleep products from it for years – something the entire island is proud of.
